Techniques Which Can Make Or Break Your Hunt
Using turkey hunting decoys wisely can make or break your
hunt. Not being the smartest of all wild birds, using
decoys to capture the attention of wild turkeys while you
move in for the kill is one of most important hunting
techniques to master. However, using turkey decoys
efficiently is not all that easy. Follow these simple tips
in order for you to get the most out of your hunt.
First, you should know that using turkey hunting decoys
every possible time is unwise. Using decoys in the middle
of a clear field or in an overly obstructed path will bear
very little use. They work best for hunting situations
that take place close to clearings and covers.
To heighten up the curiosity of your prey, choose places
that provide ample cover. Decoys work well in closed off
areas as well.
After choosing the right area to place your turkey hunting
decoys, you need to decide how many decoys you will use.
There are times that call for multiple decoys, while
others only require one. You should also base the number
of decoys that you will use on the number of turkeys that
you need to distract.
The denser the woods, the more decoys you should use. The
main goal here is to catch the attention of the birds for
as long as you need to.
You also need to decide what type of turkey hunting decoys
you need to use. The most common ones have mobile parts
that move in sync with the breeze. Stick to ones that have
a realistic look and feel, such as ones that have feathers
that sway naturally.
Motion decoys definitely work better than still decoys.
However, refrain from using ones that move too much
because they may scare the turkeys away instead of
attracting them.
In addition to this, you need to ensure that the decoys
are placed more than 15 yards but not more than 35 yards
away from your prey. You need the birds to see your decoys
clearly, but you also have to make sure that you get close
enough.
Finally, don't be afraid to mix things up every once in a
while. Remember not to use the same decoys on the same
group of turkeys, especially if your hunting trips are
scheduled close to one another. This will ensure that the
birds will still take interest in your turkey hunting
decoys and not see them for trap that they are.
