How to Make Turkey Calls - Step by Step Guide Without
Spending Too Much Money
Any professional turkey hunter will tell you that having
your own turkey call is a great asset in hunting. The more
realistic sound your call produces, the greater chance you
will have of catching a turkey. However, calls for turkey
that are available in the market do tend to be too costly.
Luckily for you, below is a step by step guide on how to
make turkey calls without spending too much money.
Step 1
The first thing that you should do is to gather the
necessary materials. Different calls for turkey are
primarily made from dry wood. If you do not want to spend
money on buying the wood, you can just use any old
furniture that you rarely use anymore. Table tops and legs
bear much potential for turkey call-making.
If you have funds to spare, you can also buy the wood from
your local hardware or wood shop. For best results, stick
to the walnut, cherry, maple, mahogany, basswood, and
poplar variety. The different types produce different
sounds. As far as how to make turkey calls is concerned,
you need to experiment with various types until you find
the tone that you prefer the most.
Step 2
After getting enough wood to make your turkey call with,
you may now start cutting them up into smaller pieces. Use
a band saw or any similar equipment to cut the wood into
broad pieces that are a quarter and eighth of an inch
thick.
If you do not plan to assemble your turkey calls right
away, find a dry place to keep all these pieces in. Take
them out when you decide to show your family and friends
how to make turkey calls.
Step 3
To make the most common type of calls, you need to
construct a box. Use a ¼ of an inch thick piece for the
bottom and the 1/8 of an inch pieces for the sides. Cut
recessed channels at the base part and use them to make
the sides as stable as possible.
Step 4
For your DIY call to produce a tone, you need to cut a
curve at the edges of the box's sides. To get the best
results and the loudest sounds, make curves that reach
from one end to another. You should end up with pieces
that are ¼ of an inch higher at the center.
Step 5
The last step on how to make turkey calls is this: cut a
hole at the bottom of the box and insert a screw and a
coil between the end block and the paddle. The paddle will
scrape the top edges of the sides, which will then produce
the turkey call, while the spring will stabilize the whole
contraption.
